Michael Braun/The News-PressA 10-year-old mystery involving a missing $57,000 rented forklift has been solved. The 8-ton forklift was recovered in Fort Myers on Tuesday at the Alligator Towing & Recovery independent impound lot sometimes used by the Fort Myers Police Department.Todd Bohl, the branch manager at the Toyota Nationwide Lift Trucks in Fort Myers, said the forklift was rented out to a job site nearly 11 years ago and when it was time to be returned it never materialized. The company offers new and used Toyota forklifts, rentals, parts, and service. The forklift went unaccounted for until an inventory was done in 2014. That's when the company went to police and filed a report, Bohl said. That's also when it was listed on a national registry of stolen equipment. The forklift was bought new by the company in 2003, he said, and it was still being paid off when it went missing.Bohl said the forklift was discovered being used at Alligator Towing after a worker inquired about parts because the one they had was needing work.' I also got an anonymous call a few days later telling me that our missing lift was at the back of the property,' he said.Because the Alligator Towing lot is private property Bohl asked Fort Myers police to check.Officers discovered the piece was the one in question after checking the serial number.A police incident report said the owner of Alligator Towing said her late husband had purchased the forklift in 2012 and she didn't know how it could be stolen.Calls to Alligator Towing for comment were not returned and an employee at the Dr.

Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard property declined to comment.' I was shocked when they brought it out,' Bohl said. 'My stickers were still on it.' Because such pieces of equipment are not titled or registered to anyone, Bohl said tracking them can be difficult.
There are registration numbers etched in the metal and Bohl matched those from the 2003 purchase paperwork. The forklift is now back at the company's Arc Road office where it will be cleaned up and pressed back into service.Surprisingly, Bohl said the forklift is in relatively good shape and only had 3,500 hours of recorded use. A piece of equipment such as this one can be used upward of 20,000 hours he said,Bohl said criminal charges aren't being considered, but civil action is possible.' We're not complaining too much,' he said. 'I'm just glad to have the asset back.' Connect with this reporter: MichaelBraunNP (Facebook) @MichaelBraunNP (Twitter).
